The piece I chose for my project is titled Mobile Matrix by Gabriel Orozco. The reason I chose this piece was because of how much I admired it. It isn’t everyday that you see art infused with real life things.
In this piece Gabriel and his crew found a beached whale that was dead. They excavated the site and put the whale back together. Each piece was diagramed and painted like you see above. I just really think that. It’s a giant whale skeleton that hangs in the National Institute of Fine Arts and the Ministry of Culture in Mexico. It was salvaged and he and his crew created the missing parts and put the whole thing together.
When I first saw this piece I was stunned. At first I thought it was the skeleton of a Shastasaurus. It is a prehistoric creature of the sea.
One thing that wasn’t my favorite of the piece was the created parts of bone. Though I am still extremely impressed with what the did I still think it would have been cooler if it was missing parts and just hung together so people could see what is becoming of our oceans. If it were to be a public service announcement then they could knock out two birds with one stone. This piece is all around amazing. I know very few artists who physically infuse real life (or real death) in their art.
